Neat! Love the intro.

I like this a fair bit - it does have something familiar about it that makes it easy to tell it's yours.
Melodically this is pretty good, it's not incredibly memorable but flows fairly nicely, and the few really minor sounding moments are cool. I also like the choice of sounds, strings particularly - I think the main lead might be a bit piercing, but it's okay as it is.

If I have some criticism, it'd be in relation to the atmosphere of the piece. You're not filling the spectrum very evenly, and while this isn't inherently bad, it makes the mix sound a bit empty (it contributes to much cleaner sounding percussion though, so there is that.)

Some stronger mid pads and a really warm sub feel like they're needed, though they're not technically mandatory. The track does feel very airy without them. To be fair, mixing becomes exponentially more difficult the more of the spectrum you fill, generally, and it can really get in the way a lot of the time. This sounds quite good as it is.

The percussion is also pretty good - though the kick lacks punch. I'd recommend EQing some highs onto it and cleaning it up around its main attack freq (usually 100-130hz.) The snare is quite good, also - it's appropriately bright, but its highs sound like they could be cleaned up a bit since it feels like it has some extraneous stuff going on up there.

The hats are pretty good too - they're a bit repetitive but they stand out, and that's definitely desirable.

I enjoyed this, especially the strings. Keep going :D

Awesome review man, lots of good info to take on board.
Going to do my best to incorporate a lot of your tips into my next track, really appreciate it.

Glad you enjoyed the song :D

Ooh.

I just reviewed your other NATA piece, and i thought it worked really well - but in terms of captured emotion, i think this one is superior. It's a little cliche, maybe, with that metallic FX... but I like it :P

Dunno what else to say really, it's not very long and stuff.

But yeah, you're very good at creating emotive music and I think this one works well :D

stunkel responds:

Thanks man. Glad you saw this captured the suspenseful emotion much better. Hopefully its enough to win that contest!

Mmmmmm.

I still love piano, and so I love this. I like it a lot more than your improvised piece, too - it's better structured and more emotional in a lot of ways.

You did a good job at capturing nostalgia, speaking of emotion. I think in that sense, this piece works extremely well.

Nice! :P

stunkel responds:

Thanks dude! But believe it or not, this is also improvised as well. A little bit of editing but yeah. Thanks for the review dude!

Really nice mix.

That snare is really nice, man. Liking the kick, the bass is nice and fat, and this one is pretty good melodically.

I feel like some wider, really massive leads would give it some needed power, but it's good as it is. The snare and bass more than make up for the less powerful sounding leads.

Obviously it's a bit short, but it's a first real shot at drumstep (at least, as far as I know.)

It's great :3

10/10

ChasingPresence responds:

Thanks bro! Can't wait to remix your song!

It's nice to see you uploading again :D
This was pretty cool, I like the chord structure around 00:44, and the energy in the track. You've definitely improved since you returned.

I just woke up, so I'm not mentally prepared for a long review :P

Great job though ^^

Foxtacy responds:

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO my old friend GenocidalToaster and many other funky nicknames :D

Thank you so much mr. It's really good to be back! :D.

It's hard to keep doing tracks all day D:, but i'll try to keep on doing that least once in a month :D

The start sounds very FL studio (I think it's the hat) but in a good way :P

This one sounds pro dude, I'm really enjoying that kick and the general atmosphere. I also like the Tom drum-roll thing before the first breakdown, and the FX sounds awesome.

I also like the positive vibe - it makes the name feel quite appropriate somehow. I can't really find any flaws with this one, the nit-picky side of me isn't saying anything. Maybe it could have a stronger sub. Maaaaaybe :P

Love the outro, btw - especially the panning on that little echo square thing.

ChasingPresence responds:

Thanks always for the great reviews, and remember it wasn't just me, don't forget Striden! XD

Oh god I love piano.

I've wanted to do a piano-focused track for a long time, this might be the inspiration I need lol. I love it.

I can tell it's improvised, but not in a bad way. You're very clearly talented, you should do more piano oriented stuff :P

Not very experienced reviewing this kind of stuff, so I don't know what else to say lol. It's great :D

stunkel responds:

Thanks man :p and don't worry about it, I'm not much help on reviewing techno stuff. Thanks though!

Pretty :3

This feels like a very atmosphere-driven piece, it's not melodically powerful but it sounds interesting despite that.

The opening confused me a little (not really what I expected) but it seemed to make sense once the piano came in. Enjoying the calm nature as usual :P
Ambient breakbeat is a good category for this, I'm quite fond of the percussion (though it too feels a little lo-fi, possibly because the hat is so tiny and short or because the snare feels like it needs a bit of reverb.)

Something about this one feels complex, even though the song sounds quite simple and driven by the way it flows. I like that.

Keep it up.

Alloud responds:

I wanted to make all the percussion hits really quick which is why I didn't reverb them and nerfed a lot of the low end in all but the kick, so it would stand out more against the instruments, then had that longer second snare hit in the pattern so it wasn't too rigid. Most of the snares are actually mostly a layered clap sample too. d:

I structured it in a way to tell a story (namely the one this track was inspired by) and tried to have certain instruments come in to the same melody at different parts in the song to really drive it in... So while it does have a bit of a popsong thing going on I tried little things to make it feel complex.

Thanks for the feedback, appreciated! Glad you liked it!

Me like.

This is actually very good, I'm enjoying it a lot. I like the low-mid LFO bass, the mix sounds very clean, the percussion is appropriately audible and has substantial power, and melodically this song is pretty awesome.

Honestly, this is the best Drum and Bass song I've heard on Newgrounds for at least a month or so. There were some moments where I was in doubt of the melodic structure (such as in the middle of the longer breakdown) but they were rendered inert by the vast majority of the song.

I do feel that the intro is a bit weak, there isn't much going on and it feels a little rough around the edges. One of your pads/choir thingies also has extremely high attack, and it really makes it sound artificial (some heavy reverb or delay could lessen that, if you can't adjust its attack.)

I also really liked this song In terms of melodic diversity, it's interesting to listen to and I'm not getting tired of it. This will probably be the first song I've downloaded from Newgrounds in the last year lol.

Seriously enjoying this. Basically Liquicity quality, imo (make it a little smoother and submit it to them :P)

ALSO, I LOVE 03;00.

Srsly.

AeroMusic responds:

Yeah, I do agree about the intro - reverb on that choir pad and maybe something else would make it alot less empty. Honestly I'm awful at intros and actually started this song trying to recreate a danny byrd intro :P
I <3 liquicity! though i've still got quite a way to go until I'm liquicity quality :P
I'm glad you like that bit at 3 minutes - I was worried other people wouldn't enjoy that part as much.
Thanks alot for the review mate

:O :O :O

Enjoying this.

It's extremely... arctic. I can really feel that. I'm enjoying how clean the mix sounds, the plucky bass, and the diverse melodic nature of the track. I also accidentally listened to it about a dozen times, because I didn't realize it was a loop. So there's that :P

This is only my subjective idea of what Drum and Bass should be, but I do feel that the snare should be heavier. The kick sounds pretty good in terms of volume and its punchiness, and the hats, while not that interesting, sound good.

Video-game music and Drum and Bass are such great genres to combine, and I enjoyed the cross-over here.

Definitely a 10/10.

Step responds:

omghi, thanks for reviewing!

":O :O :O
Enjoying this."

Haha straight to the point. I'm glad you are enjoying this!

"It's extremely... arctic. I can really feel that."

Mission objective completed then :3.

"I'm enjoying how clean the mix sounds, the plucky bass, and the diverse melodic nature of the track."

Awesome. I'm quite happy with the mix too; I'm surprised it even came out this well since I almost never do electronic tracks; they're a lot harder to mix than orchestral that's for sure. Or at least for me they are.

"I also accidentally listened to it about a dozen times, because I didn't realize it was a loop. So there's that :P"

Awesum. I think this track loops the best from all of the loops I've ever done.

"This is only my subjective idea of what Drum and Bass should be, but I do feel that the snare should be heavier. The kick sounds pretty good in terms of volume and its punchiness, and the hats, while not that interesting, sound good."

Good advice. I am convinced that a snare is the toughest drum sample to mix in electronic music; I ALWAYS have trouble choosing it, mixing it, etc.

"Video-game music and Drum and Bass are such great genres to combine, and I enjoyed the cross-over here."

I totally agree, Drum'n'Bass fits really well in video games. I had to make this a lot slower than most Drum'n'Bass though (it's only 155 BPM) since any quicker and it'd turn from a tower defence game into a racing game lol.

"Definitely a 10/10."

That's great, thanks a lot for the review!
